AAUW Disappointed in Senate Pay Equity Vote
Under heavy pressure from women’s and other civil rights groups, the Senate Wednesday narrowly failed to pass a test vote on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (H.R. 2831).

AAUW Shows the Face of Pay Equity on Capitol Hill
“I am the face of pay equity.” That is the message AAUW and its members have been sharing with policy-makers and the public. AAUW continues to share that message at the National Committee on Pay Equity press conference on Capitol Hill today.

Gender earnings gap data released
AAUW has released updated state-by-state wage gap data (2004-2006) showing the effect of a college degree on women’s earnings.

2008-2009 Fellowship and Grant Recipients Announced
Each year, winners of AAUW fellowships and grants are posted on April 15. Notification of award status including winner, alternate, and non-selected, will also be mailed to all applicants.

Scholarship deadline for NCCWSL 2008 is April 18
Want to attend the 2008 National Conference for College Women Student Leaders, but you can’t afford to go? A limited number of scholarships to cover conference fees are available. That is the simple message AAUW will be sharing with policy makers and the public all this month, as we approach Equal Pay Day on Tuesday, April 22. Plan ahead for Equal Pay Day! Request “I am the face of pay equity” signs and stickers available for use at AAUW events or download graphics from the AAUW website.

New public service ads from AAUW
AAUW is pleased to provide new public service print ad material derived from the inspirational, promotional video that has come to be popularly known as the “AAUW Mission Video.” Use the ads to seek donated ad space in local and community newspapers, and other publications.

Revised Guide to Mobilize Women Voters Released
AAUW has released a second edition of Woman-to-Woman Voter Turnout: A Manual for Community-Based Campaigns to Mobilize Women to Vote. Thanks to critical donor support, this new tool is now available free online to both AAUW members and coalition partners who are making plans to activate women voters across the country this fall.

Women and Girls in STEM
By 2010, one in four new jobs will be “technically oriented,” or involve computers. However, women still lag far behind in earning computer technology degrees and working in computer technology-related professions. Download AAUW’s position paper and learn how AAUW supports promoting and strengthening science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, especially for girls and other underrepresented populations.

Too Dumb for Words [AAUW Dialog]
So, by now, I’m sure you’ve all seen “We Scream, We Swoon. How Dumb Can We Get?” by Charlotte Allen, which appeared in last Sunday’s Washington Post. The blogosphere has been on fire with response and reaction to the gross generalizations and faulty science that Allen uses to justify her thesis that women are “kind of dim.”

We at AAUW discussed whether we should bother to dignify Allen’s blathering with a response. But it’s hard to ignore the fact that our hometown newspaper — which also happens to be one of the most prominent, respected papers in the country — would publish something so illogical, mean-spirited, and insulting to its readers.

Support Women Around the World…Celebrate International Women’s Day
This Saturday, March 8, is International Women’s Day. In honor of this day, AAUW is joining with coalition partners in supporting the Global Resources and Opportunities for Women to Thrive Act (H.R. 2965/S. 2069). This critical piece of legislation would help shape U.S. international assistance and trade policy to give women in developing countries the tools and resources they need to lift themselves and their families out of poverty. TAKE ACTION and urge your member of Congress to cosponsor the GROWTH Act.

2008 Global Summit of Women
AAUW is proud to be a Global Member of the 2008 Global Summit of Women, to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam June 5-7, 2008. The Summit explores two of the major forces that will impact the 21st century global marketplace — Women and the Asia-Pacific economies. AAUW members who attend the Summit receive special benefits as a Global Member.
