While Carolyn Garfein’s major role at the AAUW NC summer meeting was as a messenger from the AAUW board to talk to us about changes at AAUW, she also acted as our “leader on loan” with tips on improving our practices. In particular, she shared a project planning sheet that may be helpful as you start your projects. The group at the summer leadership meeting used it to brainstorm the IT Techs project.

A key initiative of AAUW is to encourage girls to pursue classes and prepare for careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Learn about a new AAUW NC project that advances this goal, a pilot project of the Triad branches in collaboration with the Tarheel Triad Council of the Girl Scouts and the Black Data Processing Associates of Charlotte to provide a training program open to girls in the Piedmont-Triad.

Local AAUW Branches, High Point, Greensboro and Winston-Salem and the Girl Scouts – Tarheel Triad Council, Inc., have created a partnership to pilot “IT TECHS.” The purpose of the project is to encourage high school girls to not only become aware of careers in Information Technology (IT), but to do directed “hands on” skill building activities. The project will be open to girls who reside in the Piedmont-Triad area. The sessions will be from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon for 8 weeks (on alternate Saturdays beginning in October 2008). Advanced classes will be available for those who qualify, culminating in competition in May 2009. Sessions will be directed by the Black Data Processing Associates of Charlotte (BDPA) which is composed of IT managers, executives, consultants, web developers, and programmers.

BDPA will provide instructors and train program participants and local AAUW volunteers. The program will expose the girls to computer concepts and give them the expertise to develop web applications. Participants will be offered a variety of skill building activities (beyond the basics taught in the public school system) and they will have direct contact with IT Professionals; thereby confirming STEM/IT majors in the real world. BDPA will be giving instructions to participants from a number of locations throughout the Triad via web cast. Local AAUW volunteers will be available to help steer the youth through the classes.

Assessment and evaluation will be achieved through informal observation and discussion with participants, informal discussion with program staff and volunteers, formalized participant interviews, and formalized data collection with program staff and volunteers.

Partial funding has been received from AAUW NC.

Contact any of the Triad Branch Presidents for more information and volunteering.
Notes from the Friday evening, July 25 board meeting in Salisbury.

At the Friday evening, July 25 board meeting in Salisbury -

The board approved in principle the creation of a North Carolina “Branch Without Borders” that will serve the entire state. It will be an alternative to our 21 community-based branches for those who live far from the nearest branch or for whom a traditional branch is not a good fit. After the branch recruits at least 15 charter members, the AAUW NC board will be asked for formal approval, and the request will be forwarded to the Association board. For more information see http://bwob.aauwnc.org.

The FY09 budget that was published in the last issue of the Tar Heel News was modified by increasing the “Minigrants and Other Projects” line from $2500 to $5000. Part of the increase is $1000 for the AAUW IT Techs pilot project that was described at the Saturday, July 26 meeting. This authorizes the executive committee to use AAUW NC resources for community and state-wide projects that advance the mission. The Policies say that the board will be asked to approve new projects/expenses more than $500 (as it was asked about AAUW IT Techs).

The reimbursement policy was changed from “$.25/mile after deducting the first 50 miles” to “reimbursement at the rate the IRS allows as a deduction for travel on behalf of 501(c)(3) organizations.” This applies to elected and appointed officers traveling to state meetings, and it may, at the option of the particular teams, also apply to team members traveling on behalf of AAUW NC, and limited by the amount in the budget for each team. The current IRS reimbursement is $.14/mile or actual expenses for gas and oil. The hotel remibursement policy ($35/night) was not changed.

See www.aauwnc.org/documents/ for copies of the Policies, the Reimbursement Form, the application form for branch mini-grants, and other key information.

A "Cliff's Notes" version of the AAUW Style Guide. Review this to catch the most common style errors found by the former editor of the AAUW NC newsletter.

Marty Folsom, former AAUW NC Tar Heel News editor, presented a short ‘how to’ session during the recent leadership meeting in Salisbury, to facilitate a smooth transition for the new editor, Gretchen Purgason. Folsom offers the following to leaders and other members to use in preparation for newsletter submissions. She notes, “A large portion of my time was spent editing to make the publication consistent, professional and packed with as much news and information possible. These tips represent the most common corrections and revisions I made.”

Use AAUW NC (not AAUWNC or AAUW-NC) or AAUW of North Carolina (not North Carolina AAUW)

Use AAUW (Name) Branch, i.e. AAUW Eden Branch, not Eden AAUW. If needed for context, write AAUW Eden (NC) Branch.

Use spell check.

AAUW NC headlines for Tar Heel News - capitalize only first word and proper nouns.

Use italics for publication titles.

Single space between sentences and between state and ZIP code. [While many of us learned to use two spaces at the end of a sentence when typing a document, the proportional fonts used in modern documents make that unnecessary.]

Commas: AAUW publications - use serial commas, i.e., one, two, and three. Public media - use the rule of two, i.e., one, two and three.

Numbers - spell out one-digit numbers, but use numbers for 10 and up.

Pay attention to person, number and tense.

7:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. - not AM or PM, Not 7:00

Use bachelor’s degree in music, but bachelor’s degree in English, doctoral degree or doctorate, or Bachelor of Arts, Master of Science degree, Doctor of Education degrees, but don’t use B.S., M.A., Ph.D.

Do not use titles such as Ms., Miss, Mr., or Mrs. in publications. Use entire name in first occurrence; surname only in subsequent mention.

Periods and commas - ALWAYS place inside quotes.

Avoid repetition, redundancies, and useless information.

Make sure the information is complete and correct.

Never underline anything. Use bold or italics for emphasis.

Write in third person; avoid using first and second person.

Use active sentences. Avoid using the verb ‘to be.’

Organize your material - most important information in first sentence.

AAUW has an official publication, AAUW Style Basics and AAUW.org Web Basics. It is a 23-page document. While many of the rules follow the AP Stylebook, there are exceptions. The rule for the use of commas is one. It is the definitive source for AAUW specific language (e.g. AAUW, not A.A.U.W. or the AAUW) so be sure to review it, particularly before sending an article to your local media.

Members wishing to read the AAUW style guide may obtain it from the AAUW.org Member Center’s “Tools and Guides” page in the “Publications and Websites” section. Other resources in that section may also be helpful. Feel free to e-mail info@aauwnc.org or call 866/525-2155 for help retrieving the document.

The AAUW NC Branch Without Borders is moving forward. Consider joining as a charter member.

At the Friday, July 25, 2008 board meeting, the AAUW NC board approved in principle the creation of a branch without borders.

We are now at the stage of recruiting at least 15 charter members. If you would like to be a part of this experiment in a new way of organizing an AAUW community, please sign up by completing this form.

Initial fees will be paid to AAUW NC (until the charter members decide on the branch name and it opens a bank account). Dues are

$0 - for members and student affiliates of AAUW NC and its branches who have already paid for 08-09

$17 - for students working on a first associate or bachelors degree who have not already paid student affiliate fees for 08-09.

$11 - for AAUW members-at-large (or branch members for 08-09 from other states) who wish to join this new branch.

Note: If your AAUW membership will expire before 12/31/08, please contact info@bwob.aauwnc.org before sending payment.

$60 - for those who wish to join/renew with AAUW by joining this branch.

This will cover your at-large membership in AAUW, so you will not need to wait until the branch formation is complete to receive membership benefits.

So, to sign up as a charter member of this branch:

If you owe anything, send your check payable to “AAUW NC” to Nancy Shoemaker, 7009 Jeffrey Dr., Raleigh, NC 27603.

Fill out the charter member information form

Please contact info@bwob.aauwnc.org if you have questions or see the earlier post for background on this idea.

[Note (8/5/08): Originally we said the dues for those joining AAUW as charter members of this branch would be $62. We had incorrect information that at-large members would pay $51 after 7/1/08, but they are actually being charged $49, the same as branch members. So we lowered the total by $2.]

At the AAUW NC 2008 Summer Meeting, Carolyn Garfein, member of the AAUW Educational Foundation board, spoke to us about recent changes in AAUW and the proposed changes for the organization once AAUW (the membership organization) and the Educational Foundation (the charitable arm) combine their assets and activities as of July 1, 2009 (as voted at the 2007 national convention).

The proposed bylaws were distributed by e-mail to AAUW leaders earlier in the month, and AAUW NC President, Millie Hoffler-Foushee printed copies for the attendees at the meeting. See AAUW Indiana for the text of the proposed bylaws and an explanatory memo

Sheila Bassoppo-Moyo, Membership VP, reports on plans for AAUW involvement in Princeville and Tarboro.

Some of you know that I’ve been connected to a project that’s working to improve conditions in Princeville, NC.

How can we have a dramatic impact in the Princeville and Tarboro area? How can we help create opportunities for women and girls as well as reach out to current members-at-large not connected to a branch in these areas? The new branch structure, Branch Without Borders, will make it easier to accomplish several goals: provide a branch structure; gain membership as well as provide a mechanism to develop projects in Princeville, an area with no members and formerly devastated by flooding; and lastly it would reconnect with Tarboro which only has 12 members-at-large.

If individual members would like to help develop projects in Princeville and Tarboro after the new structure becomes a reality, we can have a strong impact because we will have access to AAUW resources and have the ability to organize creative and meaningful projects that will make a difference to the members living in those areas.

I won’t be at the Salisbury meeting — but I’ll be thinking of you while attending my 30th college reunion.

Please contact me (find phone/e-mail on the state contacts list) if you have questions or comments.

-Sheila Bassoppo-Moyo
