PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE: Greetings, Members -

The state convention that the Wilmington Branch hosted in Wrightsville Beach was excellent. I know that everyone who was able to attend had a great time.
New state officers were elected and installed. Karla Atkinson from the Brevard branch and Lill Van Order from Wilmington will be serving as co-VPs for programming. I am looking forward to great events from that dynamic and creative pair!
Also, there are state funds available for one member from each branch who attends the National convention in June in St. Louis. I will provide details on that program at our April meeting.
Connie Gamble Ochse has graciously offered her home for our next meeting. We will meet Sunday, 26 April, at 2:00 p.m. We will review the highlights of the recent state convention, and discuss plans, programs and officers for the coming year.
On the topic of officers for next year, I will be happy to continue to serve as co-President of our branch. Katharyn Thayer will continue to serve as treasurer. Connie and Heather Ochse have agreed to continue to produce our monthly newsletter. Connie is also an integral member of the state Communications Team and she is instrumental in the Tar Heel News production process. Nelda Howell has done an excellent job as secretary this year, but she is unable to continue in that position for another year. So, we need a volunteer to serve our branch as secretary, and we also need someone to take charge of programming. It is extremely important for EACH member to take an active part in supporting the AAUW vision and mission in our area.

JoAnn Hall, Co-President
*****************************************************************

OUR NEXT MEETING: Sunday, April 26, 2-4 p.m. we will meet at Connie’s house, 107 Epworth Drive, Jacksonville. Delegates to the recent convention at Wrightsville Beach will give a recap and our next service projects will be discussed. Call 346-8223 for directions.
*****************************************************************

FREE ELECTRONICS RECYCLING: The city of Jacksonville and the Southwest Walmart are conducting a free electronics recycling drive on Saturday, April 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monitors, computers and other electronics will be accepted. (These items cannot be accepted at the landfill, so please don’t throw them in your household trash or leave them on the curb.)
*****************************************************************

OUR BRANCH IN THE NEWS: In a letter to the editor of the Jacksonville Daily News, Connie Gamble Ochse described AAUW, the recent 100 Years in NC Convention, and the accomplishments of our branch in particular. If you missed the April 4 letter, go to www.jdnews.com and search the archives to view it.
The years of campaigning are finally over, and we will have a new President in the White House in January.
Pay equity continues to be a concern. Although some improvements have been made over the years, there is still a sizable gap. A “Keep the Change” initiative will be launched in the coming months.
Transportation to the National Convention in St. Louis was also discussed. The convention will be held June 26-28, 2009. Bus travel was researched, and the pros and cons were discussed.

News about the Jacksonville Regional September meeting and more!

PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE: We would like to briefly recap our September meeting: Due to a generous donation from Chris Almeida, our scholarship fund was at $500. We discussed giving one $500 scholarship or two $250 scholarships. Our hesitation on committing to $500 annually led to the decision to stay with two $250 scholarships. With college expenses so high we wondered just how much help $250 would be. However, our latest recipient, Amy Cavanaugh, wrote to express profound appreciation for our scholarship. She proudly wrote how her position of lab technician provided results to doctors, and that 80% of doctors’ diagnoses are based on lab results.
To assist us with programming for the rest of the year, please review these options and let us know which ones appeal to you by e-mailing JoAnn - coachjo@embarqmail.com or Judy - jmartin27@ec.rr.com . Could you commit to one activity this fall and one meeting in 2009?
*I would attend a holiday dinner at Tony’s Seafood (Western Blvd.) Spouses and/or guests invited. Choose a time below.
_November 10, Monday, 6:30 p.m. OR _ November 15, Saturday, 6:30 p.m. OR _November 16, Sunday, 1:00 p.m.
*I would attend a morning 9 a.m. walking/talking meeting at the mall with a short conversation at Barnes & Noble.
*I would attend a volunteer session for -
__the Women’s Shelter
__Get out the vote/meet the candidates
__Library building fund
__Clean-up the Jacksonville region
__School supplies delivery
__Lunch-and-go at Olive Garden
__Tea-and-go at White Oak Bakery
__Lunch-and-go at Fuddrucker’s (closed meeting area)
__Meet-and-go at Barnes & Noble
__I would be interested in ways to be supportive of members (If this idea appeals, we can pursue ways to offer support.)
Thank you for your attention and input. -Judy Martin and JoAnn Hall

Notes from the Jacksonville Regional Branch.

PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE: This is our last message to you as branch co-presidents. Thank you for allowing us to serve you these last two years. As was so often mentioned at convention, “Jacksonville Regional is a small branch, but they get a lot done.” Our School Supplies Project continues to aid 7 area elementary schools. Our scholarship at Coastal Carolina Community College helps one to two students a year to further an education that otherwise might not be possible. Our contributions to Sponsors of Academic Talent and Festival of Trees support worthy community concerns. You can all be proud of the work you do in the name of AAUW. You are a part of a very mighty branch.
