VICTORY ON PUBLIC FINANCING!!!!!

Good news to report-HB 1517 passed the NC Senate yesterday!! This bill creates a public financing option for 3 Council of State offices: Commissioner of Insurance, State Auditor, and Superintendent of Public Instruction. This program will go into effect in the 2008 election.
This is the third victory this session for election reform items on NCWU’s agenda! Earlier this session, the General Assembly authorized the Town of Chapel Hill to sponsor it’s own public financing program for candidates in municipal elections in 2009 and 2011. They also approved legislation providing for Same-Day Registration for voters in NC. This makes NC the 9th state in the nation to have Same-Day Registration.

These new reforms join our already successful public financing program for appellate court races, which is being used as a model by other states.
