The AAUW NC Board is happy to announce the approval of three branch $500 Mini-Grant requests.
Raleigh-Wake County Mini-Grant
- Project Title: Generations Empowered And Restored Inc. – Keys 4 Life Program
The Raleigh Wake chapter of AAUW is actively collaborating with community-based organizations that engage in programs directly serving women, their families, and supporting inclusive opportunities that open pathways and doors to educational activities. These same program goals examine ways to eliminate barriers that exclude access to empowerment activities.
Community-based collaborations support and encourage membership opportunities, facilitating recruitment and organizational growth. AAUW provides experienced and stellar mentorship to women in leadership roles through these programs.
The Generations Empowered And Restored Incorporated (G.E.A.R. Inc.), mission is to encourage positive social interaction, facilitate communication with others, and provide a safe and trusting environment for children, as well as support educational objectives for the children in the care of family guardians with incarcerated parents.
To effectively meet this objective, GEAR, Inc. has implemented the Keys4Life Project. The project offers structured mentorship and academic enrichment programs for children of parents who are incarcerated.
Salisbury Mini-Grant
- NC AAUW Mini-Grant Application: Salisbury Branch & Area College Partnership
- Project Title: Empowering College Women: Advocacy and Action for Equity Applicant Organization
Asheville Branch Mini-Grant
- Program Title: Leveling the Playing Field for Buncombe County Girls Through STEM
- Program Description: Funding will help incorporate STEM kits into regular science content time in the classroom; and help 4th Grade Girls, for the long-term, to become more engaged with learning and collaborative problem-solvers who are better able to meet ever-changing workforce demands. The STEM kits are intended for the 4th grade classes in Buncombe County. That is 25 classes affecting 1500 students. Each Kit is $426.
- Specific Long-Term Goals: The vision is to incorporate the STEM curriculum into every classroom; not as an “add-on” or special class. Students will be listened to. Responded to with respect and appreciation.
We also want to alleviate the teachers out-of-pocket costs that are spent every year because there’s never enough money in the budget. Teachers, Parents, Students and Administration will find a co-equal balance to provide the right STEM opportunity for each classroom that makes better students, better human beings.
The branch has begun fundraising efforts for these STEM Kits. Some branch members have committed to major donations before year’s end. The branch is also working on an extensive grant writing undertaking. This mini-grant will help to support the overall fundraising efforts for this project.
