Those interested in equity for women and girls may join AAUW at the national level (and become “national” or “at-large” members) without joining any branch. There are 599 such members in 69 of North Carolina’s 100 counties. Many of these members may not know about the value of branch membership.

Here are the numbers of national-only members in the different NC Counties. Branch presidents can get the entire list from the www.aauw.org Member Services Database, contact Nancy Shoemaker at info@aauwnc.org for a list of those in specific counties, or check with her at the AAUW NC 2014 meeting.

When using a list of national-only members for recruiting, note that their expiration date can be at the end of any month, while branch members’ memberships all expire on June 30. That means when the national-only member joins a branch, her/his expiration date will shift to June 30 of the year when it currently expires and so they may gain or lose months of national membership. By policy, AAUW NC waives half-year dues for those transferring in during January-March whose new expiration date will be June 30 of the current year. If you have questions on the amount a specific member will owe when s/he joins the branch, contact connect@aauw.org.

If you are one of these national members and do not have a branch nearby (see the map of North Carolina branches), you are welcome to join the Tar Heel Branch, a virtual branch serving the entire state. Especially if there are several other national members near you, this may be a good way to forge a connection with other AAUW members. Please contact info@aauwnc.org or info@tarheel.aauwnc.org for more information.
