Research on the gender wage gap shows that it can easily cost a new graduate $1 million over her career. AAUW is training 10 million women to negotiate their financial futures by 2022.

In 2017, AAUW NC initiated an active salary negotiation program for North Carolina branches. Branches can initiate plans to provide a Start Smart salary negotiation workshop at their local college or collaborate with an organization, such as the Chamber of Commerce or other civic group, to plan a Work Smart salary negotiation workshop for the women in their community. The branch then needs to apply to AAUW NC to request approval from the state to be funded by the AAUW NC thru our license agreement with AAUW. The request form is located in Documents on this website. There is also a document on the website that provides guidance for branch members planning a salary negotiation workshop for their community.

In 2017-2018, seven workshops were offered in North Carolina hosted by the following branches: Asheville, Greensboro, Hendersonville, Salisbury Raleigh-Wake, Sandhills/Southern Pines and Winston Salem. Collaborating organizations included four community colleges, the Chamber of Commerce in Asheville, and the Women’s Resource Center in Greensboro.

Six workshops were approved for 2018-2019:
